Melasma Causes and Treatment

Skin discolorations are very common, especially among light-skinned people. The lighter the skin, the more pigment problems.

These fall into three categories: First, those caused by inflammation, such as acne, skin injury, and sunburns.

Second is "age spots", which are not due to the aging process but to UV damage from the sun's rays. They just take a while to appear, thus the designation "age spots".

Finally there is Melasma, which is a coalescence of melanin pigment in the skin due to hormonal influences (pregnancy, oral contraceptives).

These can all be grouped into a category of skin pigment problems, mostly hyperpigmentation.

Treatment of these problems are varied. Hypopigmetation, or white spots, can be due to injury, but mostly these are a condition called Vitiligo, which has an unknown cause. Treatment of this can be easily dismissed - there is none. We can make dark spots lighter, but we can not make white spots darker - except by a tattoo, which can be made to match your skin color.

While treatment of hyperpigmentation can be complicated, most can be easily treated by skin care products or other modalities available in medical spas - chemical peels, laser, intense pulsed light (IPL), or a combination of all the above.

The cheapest and easiest way to start is with the Complete Bare Skin Care Routine.
